Macarthur U3A Third Age of Learning (Inc.)

Welcome to the website of  Macarthur U3A Third Age of Learning (Inc.)  We began in 1991 and currently have about 180 members.

What is U3A?

U3A is a world-wide, self-help, non-profit, adult, learning-for-pleasure movement. Each U3A is run to suit the interests of its members and the availability of class leaders. Members are retired or semi-retired and 50 years plus.  The name U3A stands for ‘University of the Third Age’ but the term ‘university’ is taken to mean a place where people gather together to learn something of mutual interest. Class members participate and share life experiences.  Our volunteer class leaders encourage this while often learning something new themselves.  Individual U3A’s are run autonomously but there is a State body to help us.  It is called ‘U3A Network NSW Inc.’ and it assists new organisations, advises on resources and helps with the necessary insurance and licences.

How is Macarthur U3A run?

A volunteer Committee oversees the program of classes.  We have two venues – one at the Uniting Church at Campbelltown and one at the Uniting Church at Cawdor. There are around 25 classes which run all year except during Public School holidays. People are welcome to join at any time during the year.  Membership costs $15 per person p.a. (or $7.50 for half a year).  For couples it is $25 p.a. (or $12.50 for half a year).  The membership year concludes on 30 June.  There is also a voluntary weekly contribution of $4 irrespective of the number of classes attended in the week. Tea, coffee and biscuits are available for a small charge and we find that this encourages members to meet and share friendships.  We ask members to assist class leaders with the set-up for classes and to assist our older members where they can.

Course Leaders wanted

We are always on the lookout for people prepared to run an inclusive class of general interest maybe for a few weeks or on an ongoing basis.  You are encouraged to discuss this with  one of the Committee members listed on our timetable.   Contact details are provided there.  We have lots of fun in our various classes as you will see in our photos.
